The Third Iowa Cavalry Reenactors Incorporated was founded in February of 2006, by a handful of inexperienced re-enactors and a couple of history buffs. Now, our membership includes two states and continues to grow. We hail from the towns of Tipton, Davenport, Marshalltown and Hills (our corporate headquarters) in Iowa. And the towns of Rock Island, Macomb, Moline and Roscoe in Illinois.

Our Articles of Incorporation and our By-laws were accepted and documented in March of 2006 by the state of Iowa. Then, in October of 2006 this unit was officially re-mustered by Gubernatorial Proclamation, signed by Governor Tom Vilsack. We next secured our non-profit organization (501c3) status in June of 2007 (which was back dated to our founding). Each of these tasks was accomplished with pain-staking detail as we strive to become a model unit for re-enactors and the public alike.

This unit is a family orientated group that primarily portrays the troopers (mounted and dismounted) of Company D, 3d Iowa Cavalry. As well as their wives, ladies, and children. There are a variety of civilian and military roles available to portray.  So it is quite easy to find one in which you can feel comfortable.

At events, we try to maintain a living history environment within our camp to use as a medium to help educate people on the lifestyle and conditions of the 1860s. We are always ready to discuss any of the activities we perform. Such as open-fire cooking, care and firing of period weapons, maintenance of equipment and uniforms, sewing, and even period card and children’s games. Of course, we are always willing to discuss the immaterial. Such as the great history of our unit, the historical aspects of the war in general, and the many roles fulfilled by women, on and off the battlefields, of the American Civil War, just to list a few.

So, if you should ever be present at an event we are attending, please stop by and  chat with us. Who knows…some piece of knowledge that you hold could easily make you the teacher and us the pupil. Hope to see you there.
